The Firecracker 4 Miler

In 1980, 225 runners stood at the starting line in what was the inaugural Firecracker 4 Miler. A few years later, a one mile "Fun Run" was added. The Fun Run encourages family participation and has proven to be a favorite for children -- and adults -- of all ages!

The Firecracker 4 Miler has become the premier Fourth of July road race, not only in New Jersey, but throughout the region, attracting over 1,300 racers from around the country and the globe.  The course records for both male and female times were both set in 1995. The best female time is 22:10 set by Debra Daily, of Bethlehem, PA. Khalid Kairouani, of Morocco, holds the men's fastest time of 18:20.

The two races mark the start of a fun-filled day of activities for the whole family. A carnival atmosphere surrounds the town and draws people to Cranford from many different communities.  Canoe races in the beautiful Rahway River that winds for miles throughout Cranford. Rides and attractions, including food vendors and exhibitors, fill the Park, all part of the Fourth of July celebration. When the day turns into night, the sky is illuminated with one of the largest fireworks displays around.

The Firecracker 4 Miler Road Race is more than just an exciting competition for the thousands who participate or just enjoy watching. It is the Cranford Jaycee's principal fund raising event to benefit the Jaycees Scholarship Fund.  The Fund awards scholarships every year to high school seniors residing in the Township of Cranford who have demonstrated scholastic achievement and community service commitment.
